With the arrival of the new JADE 10 , the JADE series is now complete and ready to audition.
Just as a heads up on the American Walnut finish for the JADE Series.
American Walnut (or American Black Walnut) veneer is known for its rich, warm, and varied appearance, generally ranging from light brown to dark chocolate, often with hints of grey, purple, or reddish undertones.
The American Walnut Veneer used on the JADE Series is a natural product, it is not a paper or plastic print wrap.
As the colours can vary slightly to significantly between logs and even within the same sheet, sometimes featuring blonde sapwood streaks. The great thing is pairs of speakers are matched left and right and each pair is wonderfully unique in a pure and natural finish. They will age wonderfully as you and yours enjoy them for many years.
Key Color and Appearance Variations:
• Heartwood vs. Sapwood: The heartwood (center of the log) provides the classic dark brown to deep chocolate color, while the outer sapwood can range from creamy white to pale yellow or greyish.
• Tone Variations: While typically dark brown, the wood can exhibit purplish or reddish casts and darker streaks.
• Aging Process: Unlike many other woods, American Walnut tends to lighten slightly over time, moving from a deep chocolate to a softer, warmer, lighter brown, occasionally developing golden or honey tones.
• Grain Patterns: The texture is usually fine to moderately coarse, ranging from straight grain to dramatic, unique swirls and figures (such as crown cut).
• Finished Appearance: Natural oils and finishes like Danish oil can enhance the depth of the color, adding a slight sheen and rich, deeper brown tones.
Factors Affecting Color Consistency:
• Steaming: Walnut is often steamed to darken the sapwood, blending it with the heartwood to create a more consistent color across the veneer.
• UV Exposure: Constant exposure to sunlight will accelerate the lightening process.
• Veneer Matching: Techniques like "Book-matched" (paired like pages of a book) or "Slip-matched" (placed side-by-side) affect the visual flow of the color variations.
Because it is a natural product, variations in color and pattern between veneer sheets are expected.
The colour of American walnut veneer is influenced by its biological structure, how it is processed, and its environmental exposure over time.
Biological and Environmental Factors
The most fundamental variations stem from the tree's natural growth and its surrounding environment.
NOTES
• Continuous exposure to sunlight (UV rays) bleaches the dark brown heartwood, causing it to soften into a honey or golden-brown tone.
• Oxidisation: Even without direct sunlight, exposure to oxygen can shift original tones toward orange-gold.
